Afrika - Korps Information

#1

Post by Bene » 04 Aug 2002, 13:37

Hi!

My grandfather worked until the end at the docks in Tobruk and was one responsible for unloading trucks and supply from the ships. Then, I heard, he worked at a Schreibstube for Rommel or Gen. Bayerlein (I do think it was Bayerlein - don't know...).
This is the reason for me that I want more information about the Afrika - Korps.
Where can I find a good website dedicated to the Afrika - Korps? Are there such websites?

Thank you all for your help in advance!

Greetings

Bene

Books About the DAK

I'm not sure which of these would be available to someone in Austria as I only know the English translations:

Paul Carell (Spelling?) The Foxes of the Desert

I think this was published sometime in the Sixties. It is highly readable and more emphasis is placed on the personalities who served in the Afrika Korps than dry recitations of the battles themselves. This has always been my first choice.

David Irving Trail of the Fox

Before he disgraced himself, Irving was a terribly popular historian of the period. This biography dates from the seventies. It too, is very readable, but I would question some of Irving's conclusions about his subject. I also found his tone a little unlikeable as well. But that is a personal taste.

Erwin Rommel The Rommel Papers

This is the premier source on the subject. Rommel had a crystal clear writing style which has been equaled by few military men. Some of the book presents pieces of what Rommel planned to be a study on the African front which was, needless to say, never completed. Some are offical reports. A certain portion consists of his daily and brief letters to his wife. All of the book is easy to read and understand, although you may need a little study on the subject first to keep yourself located. Commentary by Liddell-Hart helps with understanding.

I hope this has been helpful to you.
