Great War Veterans in Volkssturm

Post by Mark Alinsky » 29 Aug 2002 03:57

I asked this question on Feldgrau a while back, but nobody could answer. How many World War I vets fought in the Volkssturm or other home defense or reserve units?

Probably all that still could walk, the VolksSturm was an all out last resort to get men to the frontlines of the collapsing Reich. In other words, we'll never know the exact number. HN.

Hi,
alot of WW1 vets fought in the Volkssturm.
THe only problem was, that in the Volkssturm you could only get higher ranks if you were a loyal NSDAP member. My father's grandfather, a WW1 Fähnrich and onwer of several bravness medals ( 2 silberne Tapferkeitsmedaillien) , for example was a Kompanietruppführer in the Volkssturm. But a Parteibonze who never saw action in any World War was his commander.
Cheers
Christoph
