Gerhard Barkhorn was a highly decorated German fighter ace during World War II, known for his combat achievements as part of the Luftwaffe. However, details about his personal family history and the occupations of his parents are not readily available in the public domain or commonly discussed in historical accounts. While researching historical figures, particularly during sensitive periods like the Third Reich, the availability of specific personal information can vary significantly.

Documentary evidence is in the cemetery. You think forging names is allowed? Thee laws are very strict.

I think what Edward might be saying is that the plaque in the cemetery doesn't actually say that Therese Mertinat/Barkhorn is Gerhard's mother, not that names are forged. Perhaps that lady is his aunt or some other relative. I'm sure she is his mother - it's just that the plaque doesn't confirm this, that's all. The records in the office might confirm this.

Gentleman,

I don´t quite understand the confusion about his mother´s name.

In the English version of wikipedia, which is far more detailed than the German version, you find following passage:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerhard_Barkhorn

Barkhorn was born on 20 March 1919 in Königsberg in the Free State of Prussia of the Weimar Republic. Today it is Kaliningrad in Kaliningrad Oblast, the Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea. He was the third of four children of Stadtbauoberinspektor Tiefbautechniker im Straßenbau (inspector for road construction) Wilhelm and his wife Therese. Barkhorn had two brothers, Helmut and Dieter, and a sister Meta.

So I have no doubt that Helge´s picture #3, dating 03.June of the gravestone, stating Therese Barkhorn, geb. Mertinat is his mother.

Best regards
Armin
