On 27 May 1916 Dönitz married a nurse named Ingeborg Weber (1894–1962), the daughter of a German general Erich Paul Weber.

Former Grand Admiral and last Reichspresident Karl Dönitz was released this morning from the Spandau war criminal prison after serving a 10-year sentence. Berlin police did not permit reporters to interview and photograph Dönitz and his wife when he left the prison building, but when the couple arrived by plane in Duesseldorf where Dönitz was welcomed by his family and several World War II submarine commanders in the apartment of a friend the press was admitted.
