Alois was only a half brother to Adolf - they shared the same father, Alois Hitler snr, but Alois jnr along with Angela Hitler (later Raubal and mother of Leo, Geli and Elfride Raubal) were the product of Alois Snr's second marriage to Franziska (Fanni) Matzelberger. Adolf and Paula (and Gustav, Ida, Otto and Edmund who did not survive childhood) resulted from Alois snr's marriage to Klara Polzl. Alois snr's first marriage to Anna Glassl was childless.

So, Paula was indeed Adolf's closest surviving relative until her death in 1960. A few years after her death she was, I hear, recognized as Adolf's legal heir.

Alois jnr married an Irish girl called Bridget Dowling and lived for some time in Liverpool England, producing a son William Patrick Hitler. When the marriage broke down Alois returned to Germany, survived the war and died in 1956. William Patrick moved to the US with his mother, served in the US Navy, married a girl of German extraction and settled on Long Island, New York. He died in 1987 and is survived by his wife and four sons, one of whom was killed in a car crash in 1989.

Elfiede Raubal had a daughter who stilll lives in Germany, but I haven't explored the Raubal branch in detail yet.

Cheers,

K.

Here´s a link to the Swedish section of this forum, where you can find an interrogation of Paula Hitler made by the US military. All in english, of course.
