Alois Hitler, Jr Foster Daughter

Post by Wordsworth » 21 Oct 2016 13:13

In a feature I saw on television some time ago about the Hitler family, an interview was done with Alois' Jr's "foster daughter". She was not named. She mentioned that she thought Hedwig's car was given to her by Hitler.

Does anyone know anything about who this woman is? Her name, when she was supposedly taken in by Alois & Hedwig, etc?

I've seen that feature too and have done some minimal searching for that woman.
I believe she was the biological daughter of the landlady of the house Alois was living in in Hamburg after the war. Perhaps the landlady died and they took her in.

Would love to track her down. She would be a treasure trove of information.

Could it be Erna Hietler/Hiller ?

No, Erna (also known as Petra) Hitler was married to Hans Hitler and was much older than that woman. Erna was the grandmother of this guy Michael Mach:

https://www.pressreader.com/uk/the-jewi ... 3761482660

And the claim Mach makes that Hans Hitler was Alois Hitler's illegitimate son is incorrect. Nor was he a nephew. In fact I'm not convinced that Hans Hitler was related to the more famous Hitlers within 5 generations. Probably even further back if at all.

Finding that address though is really helpful. If that was the same house they were living in when they foster-parented that woman, then we might be able to find some sort of directory showing who owned the property and get her last name.

The directories are available here:
http://agora.sub.uni-hamburg.de/subhh-a ... b/start-en

Hedwig Hiller appears at that address 1962 to 1965. The other person at the address is Heinrich Franck. If I'm reading it correctly the house was owned by H. H. Gru:nwald.

Nice find Ken.
Here is the source for saying they adopted their widowed landlady's daughter. At 10:50 -

I haven't had any success locating Alois or Hedwig at a Hamburg address between 1945 and 1961. According to the death certificate Hans Hiller was living at Landwehr 13, Hamburg at the time of his death in 1978 and at Uhlenhorst, Hamburg-Barmbek in 1959. But I haven't been able to verify either of those in the Hamburg Addressbook. Do you know if the Addressbook is based on telephone numbers, or actual residents? That is, does it just show the person to whom the telephone, or the ownership/renter of the address is?

Edit: Sorry I just realized that the address you gave (Timm-Kroeger-Weg 35) was where they moved in 1945, and Hedwig as still there in 1965 (she died in 1966) so you've got the relevant address (where the foster daughter would have lived).

Here's a brief interview with the landlord, Claus Grunewald, in 2016:

and 2010:

No mention of the foster daughter. I wonder if the foster daughter was from where they lived in Berlin, then accompanied them to Hamburg.

The video does make it sound like they adopted her -- if this is even true -- in Hamburg, but going through the Hamburg directories & the articles you linked, it doesn't make sense to me. That she would have been from Berlin seems more likely. This is from the 1943 Berlin directory:

Could the widowed landlady be "Mu:ller, M." ?

If you haven't seen it already "Ta:terprofile" (1. Band) can be downloaded here. I've only skimmed the chapter about Alois, but what stands out is that the media reported about his residency in Hamburg early on. So it's no wonder they avoided being included in the city directory.

As for Hans, first reference that I can find for him at Landwehr 13 is in 1961:

here he is in 1962, this time with a telephone number:

In addition to this mystery foster daughter, the other curiosity is why Hans and Erna Hitler stayed so close to Alois and Hedwig when they don't seem to be related. Perhaps I've made an error in my research and need to revisit it. Hans' genealogy is here:

Just got an email back from Erna's grandson and he has no knowledge of the foster daughter, but only because he also had almost no interaction with Erna. So that line of inquiry is dead.

So this Hans "Hitler" was a fake. He was a Hietler/Hiedler who called himself Hitler a long it was useful and later changed to Hiller.

Except that he kept up the ruse (if it was a ruse) after the war when it hurt him rather than helped him. Very curious.

It is not so easy to change your family name in Germany.
And bevor 1900 there were no clear rules for spelling in Germany and Austria (and de jure this is till today) Even familiy names changed so it was possible that a Hiedler changed to Hietler etc. and instead of Hiedler Schicklgruber suddenly was Hitler.

Hans Hiedler/Hietler's ancestors were from Niederösterreich, Vienna region and earlier Zwettl/Gmünd region. Adolf's Hiedler line ancestors were also from Zwettl/Gmünd region but not from the same villages ( research wikitree). Hiedler was a familiy name which was not uncommon in this area. There was no closer relationship between Hans and Adolf and there's no evidence of a farer one. If, it was probably more than 200 years ago.
When did Hans change his name from Hietler/Hiedler to Hitler?
