Klaus von Stauffenberg and his wife Nina. It has been posted before, but it was a bit small, so I don't think nobody mind seeing it again and bigger.

Glad to help, Valkyrie. I love that image of both of them, so young and happy.

I remember seeing a Stauffenberg Memorial in Berlin when I was there in 92.. do you think it could have still worked if it was planned better with the Army?

colt45:

Going a bit off-topic here (and I don't want to ruin this excellent thread), but to keep it short, the main precondition for pulling off the coup d'etat was the death of Hitler. If you really want to discus this, I suggest you either start a new thread or dig up an existing one with a suited topic, and I'd be happy to play along.

Why was Nina and the children allowed to live after they shot Stauffenberg for the plot to kill Hitler?

To the goverment it was better send them to the KZ as punishment that the short punish of execution.

And remember "they" not shot Stauffenberg. The Colonel was executed by General Fromm who was looking hide his participation. If they had been captured Stauffenberg, most probably execution way will be hanging like the others.

Sorry for the bad english.

Stauffenberg, how did you find out about attack?
I heard in the radio that there had been an assassination attempt. But it was not until the following day that my mother told me and my next-youngest brother that our father had carried it out. It was a big shock for us. After this lengthy conversation, she was picked up at night. We didn't see her again until June '45.
Our mother told us that he believed that he had to do it for Germany.
The family was torn apart. Most of the adults were then sent to concentration camps, including those who were obviously not involved. Under the Nazis there was a practice of punishing family members as well as the perpetrator. My mother and my aunt were, of course, held for questioning for a long time. We were then taken to a children's home that had been especially cleared out to take us. And we stayed there until after the invasion -- in this case by the Americans.

colt45,

I assume this is from an interview with one of the von Stauffenbergs' children? Could you give us the source you got it from?

Best,
~Vikki
