Helly, thanks so much for those great pictures - Nazi propaganda at its best! Which is not to say that that the BDM failed to have programs which appealed to a great number of young girls. It clearly did. Nonetheless, there were plenty of exceptions.
My late wife, although German, grew up in Austria where membership in the Jung Mädelbund (JM) from 10-14 and thereafter in the BDM was compulsory - at least for the daughter of a German General. She and a few, but not too many, of her contemporaries hated it because of the uniforms and regimentation, and she skipped meetings whenever she could - to a point where her mother was officially informed (her father being off to the wars) that there would be severe consequences for the entire family if the daughter didn't keep better attendance. Thereafter she was a faithful, albeit refractory, attendee until the Zusammenbruch, and, knowing my wife, undoubtedly a real pain the the rear for the leadership.
On the other hand, her elder brother was a member of the Hitler Jugend and loved it because he was in a Ritterabteilung, had his own horse and could skip classes and ride for sport. He liked it a lot less toward the war's end when he was conscripted into the Volksturm.
Thanks again for the pictures!
Regards, Kaschner
