Do you think that there was ever a chance for the USSR to become something other than a one-party totalitarian dictatorship? This is actually a serious question considering that the Bolsheviks did in fact allow a Russian Constituent Assembly to be elected in 1917 before shutting it down at the start of 1918 because its views weren't to their own liking. However, even afterwards, the Bolsheviks did, in fact, allow the Left SRs to compete with them and challenge them up to the point that the Left SRs began a campaign of terrorism in response to the Brest-Litovsk Treaty--after which point the Bolsheviks banned them and transformed Russia/(later) the USSR into a one-party totalitarian dictatorship.
