There were no cats left in Leningrad by 42/43, so a large number was sent to combat rat plague.
Main area of operation - a flour mill.

Thanks Greg!
I've heard of the cat transfer, but no idea they formed a "division"!

But since you solved the problem, so could you mind posting a new question?
Not about dogs I hope...

In April 1943 4000 Yaroslavl cats (considered the best rat-catchers) were brought to Leningrad by military train under heavy guard as a military cargo. Frightened cat meowed loudly, so Leningradians immediately nicknamed this train meows Division. This cats protected the flour mill and bakery . A year later in 1944 another train brought 5 thousands of Siberian cats to protect Leningrad museums and for sale to people. One kitten cost 10 times more expensive than a kilogram of bread

As Greg has not posted a question, I'll post a question.

Q: Which Soviet Division was officially disbanded in September 1941, two months after it was destroyed during the initial German attacks in June 1941?

Would it be 27th Rifle Division?

"Created 1920 and fought in Russian Civil War. Created again in Vitebsk before June 1941 with 132nd, 239th, and 345th Rifle Regiments. Fell in battle on Svisloch river line June 25, 1941. Was disbanded Sept 19, 1941. Recreated Aug 1941 at Arkhangelsk. (Was renamed from Rebolsky Direction Division on Sept 24, 1941) Fought near Danzig in 1945. With 19th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front May 1945."

Hi John,

The 27th wasn't the Division I was thinking of, but your quote shows that it was disbanded. The Division I was thinking of was the 17th Rifle Division. Due to the losses suffered by the Red Army in the early phase of the war, they may have been other Divisions that were also disbanded after being effectively wiped out a month or so before.

Your turn to ask a question,
"Air superiority is a condition for all operations, at sea, in land, and in the air." - Air Marshal Arthur Tedder.

2nd Rifle Division

"Formed in 1919 in the Belorussian Military District. On 22 June 1941 the division was part of the 1st Rifle Corps, 10th Army and took up defensive positions on the right flank of the army stationed in the Bialystok "bulge". The division escaped from the Bialystok pocket only to be annihilated by the German army in a pocket west of Minsk in early July 1941. The division was removed from the Soviet order of battle on 24 July 1941 and officially disbanded on 19 September 1941"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2nd_Rifle_ ... iet_Union)

However, it should be mentioned that the division was re-formed later.

Yes, and a double winner, as he is the only heavy weight wrestler to have won both the freestyle and Greco-Roman gold medals and at same Olympics.
An exceptionally good and talented athlete.
http://www.sports-reference.com/olympic ... alu-1.html

Quiz photo, and some others about him at the SA-photo archives http://sa-kuva.fi/neo?tem=webneoeng numbers 61137 - 61139 and 109867 - 109870

One rumour about him is that he served as a model for the so called Bronze Soldier statute at Tallinn, but AFAIK that is not true?

Your turn again.

Regards, Juha

This man is a legend in my country. But I have to admit, I had never seen this picture before and he does not look like any of the famous photos of him taken in freedom. I just wild-guessed it :D Thanks for the link too.

Well, to keep it going, here's another question from the top of my mind.

A major from 25th Rifle Division achieved a record of Red Army. Name the major and describe the record.
