Russian tank casualties

Post by Paul80 » 08 Apr 2003 10:24

Hi!

Could someone tell me, how many tanks were destroyed
in the eastern front 1941-1945? Especially Russian tank
casualties, because there is only few data available.

I would be thankful for any help!

Pekka Kantakoski gives in his book Punaiset Panssarit.Puna-Armeijan Panssarijoukot 1918.1945(Red Tanks.Armoured Troops of Red-Army 1918-1945) following figures for losses of Red-Army tanks:

106000-116000 tanks lost between 41-45 .

Hell that is a lot of tanks. Amazing that a country could substain such losses and still end up victorious.

Yeah,it's a lots of tanks. However SU had almost as many tanks when war ended as it had when war started.SU had some 20 000 tanks when war ended and frontline troops had 13500-15000 of them.SU build 99395 tanks during war and received 12482 tanks via lend-lease.

In average SU lost some 75-82 tanks/day and 898-983 tanks/month.

They reported almost 100,000 des but the reports were proably a bit low at least early in the war. My main reason to write is to correct your math it was closer to 2000 tanks per month.

Juha is close to truth. According to Russian general Kvashnin who bases his statement on archival information SU lost around 95-96000 tanks in the entire WWII. Of those 26 000 were lost in 1941 alone during German blitzkrieg.

best regards,
Sergei

At least according to Zetterling kursk 43 which ref an actual ger archive report the number of tanks, spATG, etc reported as des by ger on the EF during 43 was about 8000 and 9000 for all fronts. Also it seems Zolgas number of rus tanks des is not correct when you look at krivosheev and add togeather both tanks and spATGs as your own numbers show.
