Mechanised Corps 2nd Generation

Now that we have the main shtat published for the Mechanised Brigade and Tank Regiment for the war, we can proceed to establish strengths for the Mechanised Corps.

The Mechanised and Tank Corps occupied a special place in the Red Army organisation. Small units such as Brigades, Regiments and Battalions had published establishments (shtat numbers) to which their numbers were fixed in personnel and equipment and by and large they aimed to keep to these numbers. On the other hand Armies, Fronts, Independent Armies had no fixed establishment and were formed from various sub-units as needed and what was available. Mechanised Corps, Tank Corps and to an extent Rifle Corps occupied a middle ground between these two as they did not have an establishment published in the form of a shtat but rather were allocated a number of sub-units by NKO (Defence Ministry) order. So to this extent they did have a permanent establishment unlike an Army bu whether they got these sub-units or not was down to what was available in the area when forming or was available at all. Likewise as they had no establishment to work from, they could be organised differently from one another.

So at any one time the 13 Mechanised Corps (and Tank Corps) were made up of different sub-units and were on several scales of organisation. This could have a real effect on exactly how many tanks, etc were fielded and what support units were included in the Corps. Towards the end of the war, the general increase in equipment allowed the Mechanised Corps to come closer to their NKO establishment but certainly during the mid point of the war, there was a lot of variation, one reason perhaps for the Monthly Returns of the RKKA showing which sub-units were attached to a Corps whenever they are listed.

The table shows the organisational changes for the various Mechanised Corps over the course of the war and can be used with other shtat in the other threads to build up a full picture.

This is useful information probably best looked at in table form on the original site as it gives the sizes, number of vehicles etc for most of the sub units down to battalion.

The part relevant to the Mech Corps is given here:
Mech Corps TOE Jan 1943.jpg
please note that my statement before that the Mech Corps did not have an official establishment (shtat No) as such was incorrect as this one has the one: 010/416.

It is interesting to compare this to the first formed Guards Mech Corps in October 1942 as detailed in the NKO Order № 00220 which gives the following units:
Guards Mech Corps TOE Oct 1942.jpg
Many books such as the Red Army Handbook do not give a seperate establishment for the Guards Mech Corps compared to the Mech Corps but it is evident from this that they were stronger.

Other changes made around January 1943 were a reduction in the amount of motor vehicles for thr Corps in NKO Order №19 of January 1943 and the changes in AA defence as noted in the Brigade threads.

One other point to note is the scale of the ambition of the Soviet High Command.
They formed the first Tank Armies in May, in September the size of these Armies rises as they are adding a large infantry component in the form of the new Mech Corps and in January the order is to create TEN of these Tank Armies with the programme extending to June. No doubt the idea was that each of the 11 Fronts would have their own Tank Army with additional Tank/Mech Corps/Bde/Rgt available for use with Armies. However by the beginning of May 1943 there is an order halting this expansion (when 5 had been created) and ordering replacement of existing units. To fill out the planned Tank Armies would have required 20 Tank Corps and 10 Mech Corps as well as additional ones for other tasks and keeping these units up to strength. The RKKA would finish the war with 6 Tank Armies but the demands of creating and maintaining 10 would have required a massive effort to form the additional supporting units needed.

The earlier proposals were even more daring: 5 shock armies each with a quarter of a million men and 5 tank armies each with 600 tanks:

Certain element of gigantomania was typical for Soviet army organizational efforts.

Also from the same folder: examples of authorized strength tables for tank and mechanized corps from that period (mid-1944). I don't remember seeing complete tables anywhere, so I think they will be useful:

Tank Corps (from 9 Tank Corps, 1.9.44):

Image

Mechanized Corps (from 1 Mech Corps, 1.9.44):

Image

Authorized organization could vary a little from corps to corps, the main reason was availability of heavy tank regiment and organization of self-propelled regiments of the corps. Worth to note that by the end of 1944 light artillery regiment was included to the tank corps, bringing additional 600 men and 24 76-mm guns.

A quick translation of the 7 Mechanized Corps info... Great info Art and Der Alte Fritz!

7th Mechanized Novoukrainian Khingansk Order of Lenin, Red Banner, Order of Suvorov Corps
Formation Structure and command Numbers and armament History of the name
Forming the body

The 7th Mechanized Corps (2nd formation) began to be formed by NPO Directive No. 1124070 of 10.01.1943 in the Kosterevsky Tank Military Camp, with a deadline of February 20, 1943. But it was formed only during the period from August 1 to September 30 1943 in accordance with the directive No. 39976 of the General Staff of the Red Army of August 1, 1943. Formation was carried out in the Kosterevo camps near the city of Solnechnogorsk near Moscow. From the first days, the formation was led by the corps commander, Major-General of tank forces, DUBOVOI Ivan, Chief of Staff Colonel GASHIN Vyacheslav Ivanovich, and Colonel ANDREEV Alexander Pavlovich, Chief of the Political Department.

Some fighters already had combat experience. Thus, the 16th Mechanized Brigade was reorganized from the 16th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 25th Panzer Corps, which included combat operations from July 13, 1942 to June 28, 1943. The tank regiments of the other two fur brigades participated in combat operations from February 1943 The 41st Guards Tank Brigade was reorganized from the 90th Tank Brigade, which was formed at the Stalingrad ABT Center and, from April 20, 1942, participated in the Battle of Stalingrad as part of the 28th, 57th and 64th Armies, becoming the Guards.

September 15, 1943 the corps was awarded the Red Banner of Battle. This day is considered the birthday of the corps.

Daily tactical exercises, firing and exercises to muffle units and units have turned the corps into a formidable fighting force, which includes 238 tanks and self-propelled artillery systems, capable of solving various tasks in the directions of the main attacks of the fronts.

After the end of World War II, the 7th m in November 1945 was reorganized into the 7th Mechanized Division, which, as part of the 39th Army, was stationed in Manchuria near Port Arthur and Dalny. In 1956, in connection with the withdrawal of our troops from the territory of the People's Republic of China, the division was disbanded.

Mech Corps Scheme 5 010-290 September 1942.jpg
[Number of personnel for the Tank Brigade should read 1036]

This organization of mechanized corps includes 1 and 2 MC.
The 3 and 5 MС consisted of two tank brigades in the state No. 010 / 240-010 / 247, and in 4 and 6 MС the tank brigades were replaced by two tank regiments in the state 010/292.
In all the corps with such an organization were five tank regiments.

Consequently, of the six mechanized corps formed before January 1, 1943, they had three types of organization, which determined the number of tanks in the Corps:

First -
Three tank regiments 010/292 - 117 tanks
One tank brigade 010 / 240-010 / 247 - 49 tanks
total of all tanks in the MK ............ 175. of them. KV - 5 T-34 - 95 and T-70 - 75
Second -
Three tank regiments 010/292 -117 tanks
Two Tank Brigades - according to the state No. 010 / 240-010 / 247 - 98 tanks
Total tanks in the MK-224
Third -
Five tank regiments 010/292 - 195 tanks
Total tanks in the MK-204

the Corps composition was determined by separate directives issued by NKO and comrade STALIN. In some Corps, the Army Regiment of Air Defense was provided in which case scheme 5 was not common for the regiments in the Mech Corps formed in 1942

Actually there were more than 3 different types of corps, since 1 and 2 Guards Mechanized Corps formed in October 1942 had their own distinct organization:
