Research Guide to Online Russian Archives

#1

The idea of this thread is to provide links to resources to help researchers find their way round the increasing large online resources of the Russian Ministry of Defence and other sites. These sites can often be confusing to the novice user as a large part of their function is the identification of the fate of missing soldiers.

So starting with the site "The Memory of the People" "Память народа" ЦАМО РФ

here is a guide to the main FONDS (archive folders) http://www.teatrskazka.com/Raznoe/Fondy ... aroda.html

and a better search engine http://vnr.github.io/pamyat-naroda-search/
Search Engine.jpg
The Excel spreadsheets mentioned above can be found here:

https://cloud.mail.ru/public/M15B/pUgVDPX4h/

Documents are listed like this:

"F. 299, Op. 3070, D. 42" or in Russian "Ф. 299, оп. 3070, д. 42"

and from the tables above you can work out that Fond 0299 is the 1st Tank Army.

Similarly if looking for the 375th Rifle Division you need Fond 1696. and by entering that into the search engine you can see that there are 10 documents mainly from 1944 and 1945. This Fond has Op. 1 and D. 66 to 87 and that all these are combat reports.

It does not always work, for instance, I have failed to find anything about the 6th Army on the searches but have actually come across documents on the Pamyat Narod site. The excel spreadsheets are very large so it really does help if you can identify the Fond and so select a part of the spreadsheet

The other issue is that the Pamyat Narod site does not quote the F.Op.D reference on its articles, so there is no way if you do find something of finding additional documents from the same Fond.

It does actually, but not directly. If you open any image in a web browser you will see a link to the image containing a final section like:
"....238-0001584-0042/00000104.jpg"
Which stands for fond 238, opis 1584, delo 42.

Well done Art!
I had not noticed that. In fact you can see this information in three ways:
1) Scroll over the last button on the toolbar above the image (the download button) and certainly in Chrome, the address and Fond information will appear at the bottom left of your screen as the link address.
2) Actually click on this button and a new tab with a download screen will open - the address of the new tab behind the download screen shows the web address and Fond information.
3) As Art suggests, right click on the image and "open image in a new tab" and the new tab shows the Fond information.

Pamyat Naroda site seems to have a lot of pages like this at the moment where the document is not showing:

https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=454840701

List of staffing and deployment of logistics and rear services 2 УкрФ

has anyone downloaded this document before it was withdrawn?

Not sure why this is happening but the site does say it is experiencing a high demand at present.

Thanks, the methodology to search / scrap a website is interesting. And you explain it clearly and rapidly.

This is an interesting search term:
Сокращенная форма № 3
Short Form No.3
which lists all the numbers of personnel, weapons and vehicles. There are currently 171 uses of the term in Pamyat Naroda documents
