T204 Soviet Minesweeper

#1

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 17 Jun 2017, 08:16

Gentlemen,

On page 128 of the new book,"Hitler's Forgotten Flotillas",it was said that between 22 and 26 June,(1941) the Soviet minesweeper T204 laid several defensive minefields totalling about 207 mines near Libau that would sink the minesweeper M3134 on 1 July and UJ113 "Nordmark" nine days later. That was something of a record wasn't it for a single Soviet ship? What was the fate of the ship?

Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao

Gentlemen,

I could only find UJ113 "Nordmark" as the only sinking victim of T204's mines in other sources that I look while on the computer.

M.3134 sunk on german TMB mines, not soviet anchor ones.
UJ.113 was sunk when she left sweeped way in known soviet fields.
T-204 FUGAS sunk on mine 24.8.42 near island Big Tuters.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your reply. The book "Hitler's Forgotten Flotillas" had plenty of mistakes in information. The book mentions other sunk victims of the T204 which I can't find in other sources. They were V309,M1708,and M1706. I don't think that's right at all.
Sincerely,

V.309 sink most probable on german ground mine, but i'm not sure.
M.1708 was indeed sunk on soviet anchor minewhile sweeping near Libau. Thus T-204 may be reason. I can't say for sure, if other ships laying mines near Libau.
Same for M.1706.

Hello, while indeed T204 success is good (with naval mines you may often never be 100%, but we can nowadays assign 4 victories: UJ113, V309, M1708 and M1796), she was not the top-scorer as minelaying unit.

T404 in Black Sea scored equally 4 victories, even if 1 solo (harbor tug in Odessa harbor) and 3 shared (Theresia Wallner, Drossel and Brusterort) with T408

In my opinion (and with a still ongoing research), the top-scorer as soviet surface minelaying unit is the small SKA-059 (previously named SKA-0175).
She was solely responsable in Azov Sea for the sinking of 3 unnamed (not Kriegsmarine) Siebel landing crafts, the MFP F-133 and the Croat auxiliary minesweeper S-I for an amount of 5 victories.
Additionally she was co-responsable (with TK-154) of the sinking of fishing boat n°2412 with surface action.
