Point Me To Sources?

#1

Post by Carl Schwamberger » 24 Jul 2017, 01:27

I have information for the Red Army major formations in the west as of June 1941, down to division level. Glantzs 'Stumbling Colossus' among others. Am seeking comparative information for strength at least in mid 1940 & hopefully for the previous five years to 1936. It would also be helpful if this included some information on the level of training and equipment for new formations during their initial existance. I'm just trying to understand how the Red Army developed in strength as the German army was rebuilt & became a threat.

Thanks

You mean the number of large units or personnel/equipment numbers?

You're welcome. Unfortunately, there are no such data in English.

Yes, just fragments to small to be worth much. Glantz provides some thin slices that dont go beyond his narrative. I'll have to recover my Russian language to pursue this.

This document was recommended to me. To understand much of I'll have to make a line by line translation. Is anyone familiar with it & can tell me its relative value in understanding the mobilization and expansion of the Red Army?

Thanks

M. Meltyukhov, in particular the essay 'Red Army before the war: organization and cadres'

It seems a fairly comprehensive overview of the changes and reforms of the Red Army from the Civil War to 1941. It mentions all the key orders NKO and GKO making the changes. It concentrates on Military District level, Armies are mentioned but divisions are simply numbers.
May be a bit lacking in detail for you but a good overall framework?

Thanks. The section I linked is suposed to cover the period of mobilization I'm interested in. I'm averaging about two paragraphs a day translating it.
