Gentlemen,

according to an FHO estimate the Soviet Union had a manpower reserve of appr. 3,4 million in march 1943. Can someone confirm this on the basis of soviet documents?

Much appreciated!

Not sure what you call "reserves" exactly. By the start of 1943 the SU had a pool of approximately 3.5 million men who were liable to military service and phsycally fit but were not conscripted thus far. Of them about 2.5 million reserved in economy and the rest were for the most part Central Asia's natives. Also about 0.3 million recruits of 1922-1925 classes with deferments. Not counting unfit or exempt from military service. See for the source:

Also several hundred thousand men in GULAG and prisons, also the class of 1926 conscripted beginning from the second half of 1943 (at least 0.8 million).

Reserves refer to all men liable to military service that were not conscripted thus far. If this number was around 3,5 mln at the start of 1943 the FHO estimate is remarkably accurate! Thanks for replying!
