Soviet military tractors production
Soviet military tractors production
Hello,
I'm trying to compare the German & Soviet tractor production during the 1941-45 period.
According to "Accounting for war" p.197 the USSR produced 39,292 tractors, most of them in 1941, which is very close the German number (33,479) if you consider the fact that 1945 is counted entirely.
However "Accounting..." doesn't make the difference between civilian and military tractors, and to make things more complex, the Red Army used prime movers originally intended for civilian use.
So my question is: of these 39,292 tractors, how many served in the Red Army, and how many served in the civilian sector?

Re: Soviet military tractors production
Tracked tractors production in the Soviet Union:
1940 - 26 530
1941 - 23 827
1942 - 3520
1943 - 1063
1944 - 2862
1945 - 6492
http://www.teatrskazka.com/Raznoe/StatS ... VOV07.html
Almost all tractors produced in 1943 and after were STZ-NATI agricultural type.
For some reason those numbers don't include production of specialized military tractors - Voroshilovets (several hundred produced in 1941) and Ya-12:
1943 - 219
1944 - 965
1945 (to May) - 1006
One should remember that many tractors were mobilized from civilian economy in 1941-42. I saw numbers on tractors the RKKA somewhere, I'll take a look.

Re: Soviet military tractors production
From report on the number of motor vehicles in the Red Army on 1 January 1942:
Available on 22.6.1941: 43 408 tractors, of them 780 "Voroshilovets", 6668 "Komsomolets", 11 627 ChTz (aka S-60, S-65), 23 973 others.
Procured from industry by 1.1.42: 8 354 tractors (27 Voroshilovets, 3087 ChTZ, 5240 others)
Mobilized from civil economy: 30 300 all types
Available on 1.1.42: 39 625 tractors. Of them 37 472 in fronts and military districts (294 Voroshilovets, 1770 Komsomolets, 38 408 other types) and 2153 in repair at factories and repair bases.
As a slight offtopic from the same report:
Automobiles in the Red Army: 272 605 on hand on 22.6.41. 37 321 procured from industry by 1.1.42. 230 893 mobilized from civil economy. On hand on 1 January 1942: 312 793 in fronts and districts and 5692 at repair facilities.
Motorcycles: 16 234 on hand on 22.6.41, 7870 procured by 1.2.42, on hand on 1.1.42 - 10 874 in fronts and districts and 766 at repair facilities.
Trophy vehicles captured by 1 January 42: 2114 cars, 21 741 trucks, 598 tractors, 172 cross-country and towing vehicles, 5079 motorcycles. It's curious that the number of captured vehicles was quite considerable.

Re: Soviet military tractors production
From a report of the chief of Red Army's Auto-Tractor Directorate, 13 July 1942:
Tractors on hand on 1.6.42 - 40 028, of them 12 405 in need of medium and major repair
Tractor losses from 1.1.41 to 1.6.42 - 46 508
Procurement in the first half of 1942 - 2278, of them 650 in June. All STZ-5 type, production of other types of tractors discontinued.
From a report of the military commissar of the Auto-Tractor Directorate, 27 July 1942:
Losses of motor transport by 1.7.42:
Automobiles - 158 000 or 31% of availability
Tractors - 45 281 or 53%
On hand on 1.7.42:
Automobiles - 367 805, of them 66 428 in need of medium and capital repair
Tractors - 39 130, of them 10 021 in need of medium and capital repair
Received in the first half of 1942 29 314 automobiles and 2278 STZ type tractors.
In civil economy:
263 677 automobiles, of them 143 423 in need of medium and major repair
377 026 tractors, of them 52 899 in need of capital and major repair.
Production of spare parts for trucks and especially tractors in 1942 decreased dramatically compared with the previous year.
Returning to the question of military procurement, I expect the situation in 1942 and later was as follows:
Virtually all the STZ-5 tractors produced (3330 in 1942) were received by the military
Virtually all STZ-NATI tractors produced (10 603 in 1942-45) were received by civil sector
Virtually Ya-12 tractors produced (2190 to May 45, see above) were received by the military.

http://www.teatrskazka.com/Raznoe/StatS ... 15.html#t7 This is another table on the source that Art mentioned before.
I have written a little about a comparison between Germany and the Soviet Union on my website: https://www.hgwdavie.com/blog/2017/6/16 ... r-vehicles
as far as tractors was concerned, the Soviet Fleet dwarfed all other European countries and was second only to the American fleet, with the same being true of production. Looking at production is only half the story as the large size of the pre-war fleet 530,800 tractors in 1940 (Socialised agriculture of the USSR) compared to its next rival the UK with a fleet of 52,000. German agriculture did not have even this fleet as mechanisation had attracted capital into other areas, such as electric milking parlours and motive power on farms was almost all horses.
