Soviet Abbreviation ПСТ.

#1

Post by Jeff Leach » 07 Mar 2019, 08:53

I have come across an abbreviation that I can'y find the meaning to. It is usually found before a towns name ПСТ. СОФИЯ (or Анфисовка, 20 kilometers north of Бельцы), ПСТ ГИЖДЕШТь. Come to think of it, both places are along a rail line so the abbreviation probably means some kind of train station/stop (СТ.).

I would like to see it on the map or in the text to be sure, but I think it's посёлок сельского типа which means rural settlement/village.

I would consider 'посёлок сельского типа' a strage translation in the context. Both places are fairly large settlements and the Soviet documents are full of abbreviation for small places: farmsteads, churches, manor houses, 'hutor' etc.. A good map to look at the area is: TsAMO f464 op5689 d45 (9th Army Map), which can be found on Pamyat-Naroda. Sofia (Anfisovka on the map) is 20 kilometers due north of Bel'cy and Gizhdesht' is about 10 kilometer south of where the Reut River switches from flowing east to south (about 30 kilometers east of Bel'cy).

Here is an example from records of the 74th Rifle Division (in the records of the 176th Rifle Division there is references to both Sofia and Pst. Sofia).

Yes, you are right. It seems to be limited to train stations only. Some were labelled as ПСТ.

"полустанок" - literally "half-station". A small railroad station in essence.
