I have a hunch author Robert Beckhusen not familiar with the Gen Patton political bloc that appreciated longer road trips than to Elbe-Neuss.
Some publications would prohibit expressions like the article's italicized "and invaded Northwest Europe". It would read: "and LIBERATED Northwest Europe".
The follow-on comment by "olo" is interesting.
