Pre-war and 1941 Tank and Mechanised units

Motorised Division 05-70.jpg

Patience is a virtue and things come to those that wait...... beside which my Russian is not sufficiently competent so I have to give people a chance to correct my many mistakes

The documents come from Soviet Ministry of Defense: Organization History of the Mechanized Forces

There is also a three volume set of the official wartime shtats

these should be more detailed than the pictures posted

there are some more volumes on the later mechanized forces too.

Note these are available as PDF. Don't know if you can find them on Pamyat-Naroda.ru.

REPORT on the development of armoured and mechanized troops of the Red Army in the course of the Patriotic War.

The treacherous attack of Hitlerite Germany on the Soviet Union, without an “outbreak of war”, on June 22, 1941 found the Red Army Armored Forces in the period of reorganization.
The tank brigades that existed before 1940 were reorganized into tank divisions and corps.
The plan was to form 29 mechanized corps, 3 separate tank divisions and 2 separate motorized divisions.
By the beginning of the war they were not fully equipped with personnel and equipment; at the same time, combat vehicles were of the old BT, T-26 and T-38-40 models with low combat value and only a small percentage were T-34 and KV tanks, the combat value which met the requirements of fighting in modern warfare. Tanks T-34 and KV entered into service in small quantities, because the production capacity of the industrial plants was small, while providing them with fuels and lubricants / diesel fuel / was difficult and did not always arrive in the required quantity and on time. This was caused by a variety of fuel / 1st grade, KB-70, gas oil /. The organizational structure of the tank, troops was as follows:

The nominal number of combat vehicles in all corps was 31.574 tanks, of which: heavy - 3.843, medium - 12810, BT - T-26 - 14.394, T-40, T-38 - 527.
There were 16,545 tanks in all corps as of 6/20/1941, of which: "KV" and "T-35" / 49 / - 523, T-34 and "T-28" / 403 / - 1194, "BT" and "T-26" / T-26ogn. -1114 / - 14.259, "T-40," T-38 "- 567.
The tank regiments of some of the tank and motorized divisions that did not have a combat materiel and were armed with artillery and machine guns, with the intention of acting as artillery regiments before the receipt of their combat material.
Such a small number of incompletely staffed, unbuilt Corps, in the command and management of which had no experience, could not resist the suddenly invading tank masses of the German army, already having experience gained in Western Europe, and having no shortage of materiel because of exploiting the industry of the occupied countries of Europe.
By GKO decree of July 6, 1941, 10 tank divisions were formed from mechanized corps divisions in the state No. 010/44 - 010/52, and by the GShKA directive.
No. Org / 4/538249 of July 1941 and all other divisions were transferred to this state.
