I'm trying to configure it out why did the "Katusha" units and IS-2 separate tank regiments get their Guard titles in advance? Any idea is appreciated .

Greetings,

The quick answer is that these units were considered Guards (special/elite formations) due to their weapons.

Note: Rocket artillery (Katyusha = Little Kate) were given the code name Guards "Mortars" as a cover name to disguise the use of rockets.

Hope this helps

There were also guards units of the Leningrad militia in 1941.
