The Russian National Anthem

#1

Post by Dan Feltmate » 13 May 2002, 05:45

Hello,

I am sitting here listening to the Russian National Anthem, and I am wondering if anyone has translation of the words. It is a really great tune, and the version I am listening to I downloaded from http://www.audiogalaxy.com

It's apparently done by the Red Army Choir, and it's quite a powerful moving and motivational piece of work.

Who wrote it? What are the lyrics? What is it about?

As the title when I play it in Winamp
"Red Army Choir" CCCP National Anthem

anyways, hopefully you can answer my questions

Thanks in advance,

- Dan

Funnily enough I had the same urge to read the lyrics after hearing it on "The Hunt for Red October". It is a very powerful tune and I beleive has been kept for the 'New Russia' with altered words.

History:

English lyric (CPSU version):

I know the lyrics, translated to English.

The song doesnt sound so majestic in English

The Hymn of the Soviet Union

Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand.
Created in struggle by will of the people,
United and mighty, our Soviet land!

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
Inspired them to labor and valorous deed.
[Or, the old way:
Be true to the people, thus Stalin has reared us,
Inspire us to labor and valorous deed!]

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

In the vict'ry of Communism's deathless ideal,
We see the future of our dear land.
And to her fluttering scarlet banner,
Selflessly true we always shall stand!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^6

as you can see, its about as prophetic as 'The sun will never set on the British Empire'---yeah, right.

Modern Russia changed the anthem, only to have it changed back to the Soviet Anthem with capitalist lyrics
