number of Soviet operational tanks facing AGC in late August/early September 1941

Hello,

I wonder if any of you possess data on how many operational tanks did the RKKA have in front of Army Group Center in the second half of August 1941 (early September). If the number of operational tanks in this section of the front is unknown, then I would be happy with an overall figure (non-combat-ready tanks included).

I am also searching for the percentage of the Soviet operational tanks on the eve of Operation Typhoon facing Army Group Center (I have the strength figure of 1044 tanks) for comparison reason.

I am thankful for any bits of information!

Maybe this time someone finally contributes to my inquiries,

Best regards!

Hi taurus,

No, I have not, since I do not speak Russian.

Nothing in this book on the subject. There is a known figure of 1000+ tanks in the West, Reserve and Bryansk Fronts at the end of September 1941 (for example "Великая Отечественная война 1941-1945 гг. Кампании и стратегические операции в цифрах")

Thanks, Art.

What do you think about this document (dated 11th of August 1941)? I found it on pamyat-naroda.ru. Does the "KA" abbreviation stand for Krasnaya Armiya?

That's the table from the war diary of the West Front. 299 tanks in the West Front on 10 August 1941 seems a reasonable number. But it pertains to the West Front alone, and doesn't include Reserve and Central Front.

Okay, at least we have something. Is there any sense and basis for extrapolating similar figures for the other two fronts, based on this report and the state of the armored forces of these three fronts at the end of September (per Lopukhovsky's "The Viaz'ma Catastrophe")? That way, Reserve and Central Front would have had around 345 tanks ((299/486 x (301+259)). Overall, 644 tanks. Of them (let's assume between 80-90% operationality) 547 combat-ready? I am open to your suggestions and corrections.
