Special Platoons Red Army

Hi all - I had a quick question about a phrase which popped up. In a document about 2/1234 Rifle Regiment's fighting at Trawniki on 7/24, the phrase "спец. взводов" pops up in the context:

While "specialist platoons" seems like the obvious translation, in the context of heavy casualties I thought it might also refer to reduced companies re-organized into special platoons due to losses. Any clarifications would be appreciated. Thanks!

The special platoon in the battalion is a communications platoon, a supply platoon, a management platoon.
