Russians with "Tommy" guns

Russians with "Tommy" guns
I just bought a book about the fall of sebastopol that was writen in 42 and published in Brazil in 43 and the author keeps talking about russian soldiers with "tommy" guns. Did they have any or he is talkinh about PPSH?

In many books I've read, Germans seem to refer to any SMG including their own as Tommy Guns. Maybe it's the way the language is translated, and tommy gun is as close to an english translation as possible, or they may call them that so us dumb westerners know what they are talking about but I've seen this may times mainly in older books.
