There are some fragments from memories of Guards Captain (retired) Mr. Yakushin, Soviet AT-officer from 5th Guards Cavalry Division, 24th Guards Cavalry Regiment that I posted at

http://www.redguards.org.

The direct link would be

http://www.redguards.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=105

I also made several interviews with Mr. Yakushin about tactics of Soviet Cavalry in WWII, but all interviews are in Russian. I hope that finally there will be a book of memories of Mr. Yaksuhin in English.

With best regards,

Hi there,

well, I don't know much about cavalry in Stalingrad battle, but my guess would be that their role was the same as later in the war - mobile units that would rush into any breakthrough reached by Soviet infantry and carry out a long range raid into the German rear.

with best regards,

The tank army that broke through the north part of stalingrad was made of 2 tank units and 1 cav corps. The cav corp at least at this time and place was made up of 3 small 5000 men cav divs. Considering the ger inf divs were supposed to be 15,000 strong its a tiny force. As the war went on the use of cav declined and in tank units diappeared.

well, of course German infantry divisions were supposed to be 15000 men each, but were they by the beginning of Stalingrad offensive of Red Army? BTW, 5000 men is a regular size of an infantry division in Red Army during the second phase of the war.
