Soviet transport planes

Post by Csaba Becze » 01 Aug 2002 13:01

Hi,

I am looking info about Soviet transport planes in 1941. I know, that they used the Li 2 and some obsolete TB 3 too, but I've found a report, that Hungarian forces saw a 3. mot. Soviet transport plane in August, 1941 (behind enemy lines). I think, it was a mistake, because the Red Army never used 3. mot. transport planes. Perhaps it was a TB 3?
Who knows this? Did they use 3. mot. transport planes, or not?

Romanian pilots also reported destroying three-engine Soviet aircraft on the ground. Maybe they were twin-engines.

I asked a Russian, expert, he said too, that they had just 2 or 4 engine planes (just the Ju 52 was a 3 mot plane in the Red Army)

Could be they were Italian Aircraft captured by Soviets. Perhaps SM 79 or 81s? :?

The tri-engine aircraft were claimed destroyed on the ground during the first day of war. How could they had been captured Italian Savoias? :?

They were probably Li-2s. The nose could be mistaken for an engine maybe.

There was an experimental transport plane built by Polikarpov's design bureau called the Polikarpov MP. It was a high-wing transport plane of made from wood, and it was based on the BDP transport glider, powered by two Shvetsov M-11F air-cooled radial engines. The MP could carry 20 troops and had seven light infantry machine guns. More info on the MP is available at these links:
