SS-Division Insignia / Emblem Question

#1

Post by wbell » 21 Nov 2017, 15:42

I've noticed that the SS Division Insignia / Emblems have notches missing on some of their shields. I've been thinking of why this is the case. In medieval times, knight's (Calvary) shields sometimes had a notch to accommodate the lance. I've noticed that mobile units had the notch, where most Infantry units didn't, but other than that I don't understand the reasoning. Does anyone know if this is symbolic in anyway, or is this just a difference in design? Thanks for your comments.

I hope I've got these correct...

Missing Right corner: (SS Panzer Division)

Leibstandarte (LSSAH)
Das Reich
Totenkopf
Wiking
Hohenstaufen
Frundsberg
Hitlerjugend

Missing Left corner: (SS Panzer Grenadier Division)

Polizei Division
Nordland
Reichsführer-SS
Götz von Berlichingen
"Horst Wessel"
Nederland
Wallonien
"Nibelungen"

Missing Middlepart: (SS Infantry or SS Division)
Nord
Prinz Eugen
Florian Geyer
Handschar
Skanderbeg
Maria Theresia
"Karstjäger"
"Lützow"

Full shield (No parts missing): Infantry, all other types: (SS Division)
Galizische Nr. 1
Lettische Nr. 1
Landstorm Nederland
Polizei-Division
Dirlewanger
Charlemange

Most of the so call Divisional shields never were actually used by the units involved... many of the listed units never existed in any real numbers and certainly never saw or knew of these designs... most is postwar veterans type stuff. What the particular shapes mean is probably some Nordic Hearldric symbolism...but of no real historical meaning worth the research in my opinion. There are many sites with the shields illustrated... some may discuss what the shapes represent... don't know.
Just my comments...
