SS Helmet help! Authentic? *Added more photos
I have the opportunity to get this helmet and wanted to get your opinion on it... it looks authentic but wanted to get anyone else's opinion before I purchase it.
It's rusted and deteriorated but a nice item to have.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Re: Old SS double decal helmet help! Authentic? Rusted and deteriorating
Withouit a close up of the decal, hard to tell if legit.. Be warned.. lots of scammers add a decal to a rust bucket, then fake age them. What is the price on this dug relic?

That's exactly what I was thinking about them aging it and then selling it as a fake like you said. However, the gentlemen found it in a new home that they moved into and just wants it out... he doesnt want to throw it away and rather give it to someone who will cherish its value.Mark in Cleveland, Tn. wrote:Withouit a close up of the decal, hard to tell if legit.. Having said that... he has no reason to fake it. But that doesnt mean its a fake and he doesnt know it.

I dont like it for the following reasons:
a) The reddish orange rust is indicative of new corrosion not the deep crimson on old rust and is typical of helmets that have been pissed on (yes, fakers do that and leave them out in the elements) or another stimulant to corrosion is added then left outdoors.
b) the pitting to the shell and corrosion around the helmet rim is indicative of a caustic corrosive being used to eat away and simulate aging and you can see the semicircles of where it bubbled in areas to cause the eaten away effect as it lay flat. You used to see this same fake aging applied to zinc ID disks and the effect is exactly the same.
c) The SS Decal outside of being scoured likely with an abrasive pad to remove detail is not affected by the rust aging they attempted. Telling isnt it?
Decals were baked on and this area would also be rusted. Helmet decals were also foiled back creating a metal to metal shell area/ They deliberately avoided this area for obvious monetary reasons - to dupe someone on the fake SS connection.
d) The condition is ridiculous on so many levels. Do a cursory google search on ground dug or water found German helmets. They come out of the ground, bog, river, or stream in far better shape than this monster.
Nothing I would put my money towards or something I would want on a shelf.
Best regards
