This is a wartime portrait of an army officer in "walking-out" dress.

His rank is Oberleutnant. His awards are the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, the Infantry Assault Badge in Silver and the Wound Badge in Silver or Gold.

Note that he is wearing a Brunswick-style Death's Head between the eagle and cockade on his peaked cap. This was a traditions badge worn by a few infantry- and cavalry units. From his branch and the time period, he must have been a member of the staff or of the 1st or 2nd battalion of Infantry Regiment 17.
