In search of: R. Poleta

Post by TiesG » 24 Sep 2023 18:52

Hello everyone,

Last year I got a M35 DD SS helmet named to R. Poleta. Also written on the inside is III B. 9 K. what may be 3. Bataillon, 9 Kompanie, but I am not sure about that. The helmet was left behind in de city of Groningen, Holland after the fierce fighting in april 1945. The helmet has two shrapnel holes, but I think the helmet received some hits after it allready laid on the ground because Poleta isn't listed on the Volksbund site, and after two of these hits someone is dead for sure. Afterwards someone tried to hit the swastika, wich almost succeeded.

Did anyone ever came across the name Poleta in SS documents? It is a very unusual surname, so i thought it would be easy to find something about it, but sadly not. I suspect Poleta might be a (higher ranking) officer because of the fact he wore a M35 double decal.

Thanks in forward,

Ties

Oeps, I think I allready answered my question really fast. It seems to be Foletar, Julius, 9. Kompanie SS - Der Führer, KIA on the Grebbeberg 11 may 1940 with shrapnel throught his head.

Wow, that is quite a piece. Heavy.

So the initial info about it being from Groningen April 1945 was not correct?

Thanks for sharing this. Morbid to be sure, but historically incredible. An artifact that demands respect.

Cheers,

Rafael

Well, it might be correct, but somewhere between 1940 and 1945 the helmet somehow got to Groningen. I got it from the actual finder who found it as a boy during the liberation of Groningen. On my website are some more pictures (Dutch only) https://www.oorlogsmuseummiddelstum.com ... us-foletar
