Hipo Enlisted man, Guard duty
on this pic you can see the uniform used 1945 for a HIPO prospect in guard duty.
In Foregin Legions vol. l. by Littlejohn some tentative sketches showed the cap badge, and rank where described
as that of the former danish police, but the ranks where a mixture of that of the Schalburg-Corps (and this again where more german-police alike with some mix of danish army.)
The prospecters could be youngsters aged at 15-17, maybee seeking some adventure, and they often acted as guards outside the Policeyard(Police HQ) in Copenhagen. They guarded the garage plants for Patrol-cars,, this been seetled in Baracks nearby, and often they where up on the roof as look-out posts.
The Uniform you can see, may be a former Lufwaffe-Uniform, dryed black. No collarpatches used here, only shoulderboards as used by Waffen-SS (Black with white colour of arms)
Note that the shoulderboards from Vagtmester(Wachmeister) up to captain, where the same Waffen-SS model, but without colour of arms. Collarpatches for a Vagtmester ,had one star, as a Unterscharführer in the WSS.
On the arm you can see a double litzen, made by LW matte silver litzen, and sad to say, even looking back at many years interest in this topi, I am not able to tell the properly rank for this.
I should be Rottenführer or anwärter, but I have only seen the designation written on a pic, Tropsfoerer(Truppführer) but this make no sense for me, if any know???

the buttons on this Uniform are german pebbled, (marked Assmann & Söhne) and not the danish silverwash lion/hearts button.
HIPO where armed with leftover weapons from the danish police. short of guns, they used weapons dropped from the british ( by Parachute )in metal containers for the resistance.
Among these ,where the british Stens, and this one is, a real relic, a non-functionel movie prop made by the danish Film plant "Nordisk Film", the gun acted in the movie "There will be a day" from 1955.
Danish police had the Husquarna MP from Sweden, made on license at Danish Industry Syndicate-they where used properly by HIPO, and if the Resistence could get a "hit" of a HIPO, even the gun was worth it.
In a letter to me, from a former HIPO, he wrote, having 50 shot in the barrel," this was really something," it could part a car in two" and single shots to, which the german MP 40 did not have.
All officers where very fond of the US Carabin, they called it a "Schnellfeuergewehr" and had it with them everywhere, on the shoulder, the pipe down, ready to shoot, and besides this, they often carried an extra pistol in the boots ,as I was told "We where never naked-no one should get us" and they had the right to be frightened, Copenhagen with lights out, were Chicago these days.

hipogroup
the last pic concerning HIPO, showing them as to be seen in Copenhagen 1945,
It should be noted that the HIPO was a branch of the ET (Efterretningstjenesten, Secret Service)that had its origin in the Schalburg-Corps. acting as plain cloath -men , already from june 1944, and from marts 1945 constisting of 14 appartments, of which HIPO was no 5.
The uniformed HIPOs where only to be seen in Copenhagen. An auxiliary service was done to the German police in Denmark as ET had some 24 posts consisting of each 3 men stationed at the german Feldgendarmerie, these to be found in 24 different towns in DK. They obtained a Uniform in march 1945 , but they where mostely plain-cloathed.

danish police cap, intro. 1938
pic of danish police cap, enlisted ranks,
Comparing this pics of a danish policecap, one will realise that the emblems used by danish police are not to any extent, the same as HIPO, as stated in the book, Forign Legions of the III Reich, vol 1.
In 1938 danish police where new-organised from being a police that where a constabulay in the local municipal administration, now being a state-police, and new capbadges, and a badge for the uniform with the coat of danish arms, where issued. The new uniform had its origin in tradition from Schweden and the USA, now showing open collar, a free look to the shirt and tie, as the former uniforms had a closed neck, with 8 buttons in front.
Hipo used the old and new uniforms as well, stripped off danish police emblems.
