On the back piece that protects the neck on the inside just below the liner on my M-42 helmet is a number: "21331" Anyone know what it stands for? Is it just the # of the helmet?
Also it has the markings of manufacture at Eisenhüttenwerke Thule.

Hello,
The meaning of the numbers:

In addition, a second set of markings are also often found on original wartime manufactured shells. This second set of numbers only appears at the center rear of the skirt and typically under the alpha-numeric code if it is also stamped in this location. This second string of numbers usually includes three or four digits representing the batch (or production run) that a given helmet came from within the production cycle.
