I am not sure but have these helmets camouflage paint?? What do you think?

It could also be mud, hard to say.

I think that its mud also. btw Isn't the MG in a very exposed position. One wonders who or what they were observing? Looks Eastern front, by the dwelling on right (unless that's a haystack)!!
