German MG 08 as AA at Sina-Palestina Front. Turkish way of fighting. To revolve the MG againts planes they put it on a wheel of a cart.

Tosun,

Mate interesting, I wonder what types of guns this unit was?

(k.u.k. Haubitz-Division Luftfahrtruppen Ballonabteilung Nr 22) served at Palestine

I wonder if like the Germans

Earlier those Flak units were called Bak (Ballon-Abwehr-Kanonen), later it changed into Flak

I could find no mention of a (KUK) unit called the 22nd Luftfahrtruppen Ballonabteilung anywhere?

I wonder where they were used?

Sorry I have no idea also. I found somewhere the title of abteilung and took a note in my book. I am searching also but nothing. The only thing that I know about ballonabteilung is that they served as radio units with a range of 300 km in İstanbul.:)

Mates,

The answer appears to be

Peter Jung gives same information about "Radiodetachement der k.u.k. Luftfahrtruppen in Konstantinople"
Who can give more information about this unit and its commander Lt. Ing Erban?

So it was a radio unit under Lt Erban

Mates,

I have mention before about this unit

15th AA Bty (2x 77mm AA guns) with 701st FAR Pasha II Group

British Intell report captured from a German document states that this unit was mounted of Trucks, I have not seen any photos of these truck mounted AAA guns as yet.

Cheers

Mates,

On rereading Serno, he states that the first two German AA units arrived in Turkey late 1915 and taken into Turkish service.

These were placed along the Dardenelles and a Flak school was formed.

No details on the names of these units or where the Flak school was set up for Turkish soldiers, only they started training.

More to look into.

Mates,

I notice a mention of two AA Flak trains sent from Germany in 1917 for use in the defence of Constantinople and the fleet at Stenia.

They at shown as Numbers 30th and 31st AA Trains (Flakzilge)

Has any one heard of these before?

Are there any photos of these?

Mates,

I am informed that these were not Flak trains but Flakzug (AA sections).

These appear to have arrived with the Pascha 1 units with AA flakzug's sent to the Ottoman Army during early 1917. Most were sent on to Palestine by June 1917, but others were to protect the capital and important bases.

The Flak School

Flakschule at St. Stefano (around Dec 1915)

these Flak units

Flakzug 30 (German number: 96)
Flakzug 31 (German number: 153)

Mates,

PS, sorry I should have mentioned that the Flakzug batteries (30 & 31) were formed from Russian 7.62mm guns, each of two guns.

This from a German mate;

"in general the German term Zug (plural: Züge) is equivalent to the English term platoon. A Flakzug is a Flak unit with 2 guns.

I found Flakzug No 30 and 31 on page 242 of the book "Die technische Entwicklung der Flakwaffe bis zum Ende des Weltkrieges" [The Technical Development of the Flak arm until the End of the World War] ] (1942) in the table "Nr. 88 Übersicht über die Beuteflak" [No.88 Overview of the Booty Flak].

The guns for Flakzug Nr. 30 were ordered on 27 July 1915 and delivered in July 1915. The first use was in the homeland. The 2 gun of this unit were Russian 7.62 cm guns put on a "Wagen" (vehicle) and therefore called Wagen-Flak, short: W.-Flak.

The guns of Flakzug Nr. 31 were Russian 7.62 cm guns as well. However, they are listed as O.-Flak = Ortsfeste Flak (immobile Flak). The guns of Flakzug Nr. 31-53 were ordered on 27 July 1915 and delivered between November 1915 and February 1916"

I did wonder who their commanders were from Tosun's list of Flak officers?

Lt. Brandt at South Wing in Gallipoli (possibly)

Lt Jahn at Taurus mountains (no idea what or where unit this was?)

Lt. Uber at Haleppo (possibly Aleppo) no idea where these batteries were, possibly to cover Adana area Gulf of Alexandretta or Smyrna)
Lt. Hild at Haleppo "" """

possibly to cover the Air bases there

German Seaplane Sqn to Mersina Gulf of Alexandretta 1917
Ottoman 4th Sqn (company) - formed at Mersina (Silifke) Gulf of Alexandretta 5-16 shown (1x Albatros B1 & 1x Albatros C3) at Silifke 12-16 before its move to Amman around 1918

Cheers

Mate,

Sorry no I have not seen any, other then reports by allied airmen on sorties who were engaged by AA Batteries.

These mostly are over the Palestine front and bases all over Palestine when Allied planes started there bombing sorties during late 1917 and 1918.

The Allied bases on the Islands off Gallipoli were used to bomb the Istanboul area during the war as well as cities along the Turkish coast, where they were engaged by AA batteries.
