Regts of the 8th Div 1918

Post by stevebecker » 01 Mar 2016 03:11

Mates,

I was trying to tie down the missing Regts of the 8th Div after its disbandment.

Most reports say the 8th Div was inactivated early 1918 in the Caucasus

While British Intell reports keep reporting this Div to Feb 1918

shown Jan 1918 Allied reports (3200 men 46xMGs) 17th Regt 23rd Regt 24th Regt -
shown Feb 1918 Allied reports (3200 men 36xMGs 100 cav)

After that date the Regts show up in a number of places?

Allied reports on the 17th Regt - Palestine

shown Mar 1918 Seria Group & battle of Amman (2Bn&3Bn/150th Regt & 1Bn&3Bn/152nd Regt (850 men 24xMGs 100 cav) 126th Regt (11th Div) 1Bn&2Bn/17th Regt (8th Div) 2Bn/24th Regt (8th Div) 191st Regt (59th Div) 23rd Regt (8th Div) or possibly 123rd Regt (42nd Div) 2Bn&3Bn/159th Regt (24th Div)

shown May 1918 Allied reports 46th Div - 144th Regt (1000 men 22 MG's) + 3Bn/17th Regt (200 men 4 MG's) -

shown July 1918 Allied reports 46th Div - 144th Regt + 178th MG Co (33xMG's) 17th Comp Regt (3Bn/17th Regt 2Bn/74 Regt 4Bn/73rd Regt 3Bn/75th Regt 73rd MG Co + 75th MG Co (24xMG's) (now 24 MG's per Regt)

shown Sept 1918 Allied reports 20th Div (94 MG's) 2Bn/17th Regt (140 men) 61stRegt (510 men) 62nd Regt (690 men) attack/storm Co (70 men) & Div Cav (100 men)

The remainder of the 17th Regt disappears during the Damascus retreat Oct Nov 1918

23rd Regt - Palestine?

shown Mar 1918 Seria Group & battle of Amman (2Bn&3Bn/150th Regt & 1Bn&3Bn/152nd Regt (850 men 24xMGs 100 cav) 126th Regt (11th Div) 1Bn&2Bn/17th Regt (8th Div) 2Bn/24th Regt (8th Div) 191st Regt (59th Div) 23rd Regt (8th Div) or possibly 123rd Regt (42nd Div) 2Bn&3Bn/159th Regt (24th Div)

shown Sept 1918 Allied reports 48th Div - 23rd Regt or possibly 123rd Regt (42nd Div) (550 men 20 MG's) 191st Regt (18 MG's) + 63rd Regt (20th Div) (18 Mg's) (1350 men 36 MG's) 24th MG Co (G) (4 MG's)

The last reports for this Regt places it with the 48th Div around Amman Sept 1918, but other reports shown this was the 123rd Regt (42nd Div) not the 23rd Regt (8th Div)?

Other then this no other details are known on the 23rd Regt?

24th Regt - (Iraq)

shown Mar 1918 5th Div - 24th Regt (8th Div) possibly replaced 15th Regt?

shown April 1918 Allied reports 23rd Regt possibly 123rd Regt (200 men 4xMGs) + 2Bn/24th Regt (500 men 12xMGs) with 48th Div at Amman

shown June - July 1918 Allied reports 48th Div - 2xBns/17th Regt (450 men 12 MG's) 23rd Regt or 123rd Regt (?) + 2Bn/24th Regt (600 men 20 MG's) 2Bn&3Bn/66th Regt (600 men 6 MG's) 63rd Regt (20th Div) (800 men 18 MG's) 143rd Regt (800 men 24 MG's) 191st Regt (900 men 18 MG's) + 125th Regt July 1918 part 1Bn/146th Regt (G) (225 men 17 MG's)

shown Sept 1918 Allied reports (Comp Cav Regt (630 cav) 24th Regt + Eng Co (1165 men) 2xBtys 9 guns) near Anah Iraq

8th FAR (Field Artillery Regt)

I have not looked at the 8th Div Artillery as they move around at lot.

But I record this on them;

shown July 1918 Allied reports 1st Div - 1Bn/1st FAR (8x 75mm guns) 2Bn/8th FAR (6x 75mm guns)

The 2Bn appears to be the only formation that survived or at lest recorded after Feb 1918 that's because it went to Palestine, the other Artillery Bns may have been placed with units in the Caucasus?

If you can add any thing on these Regts I may have missed, please past it on?

Cheers

Mates,

Further details from British reports place the 23rd and 24th Regts on the Amman front during April but they correct themselves and add that the 23rd Regt and one BN 24th Regt (2Bn/24th Regt) was with them.

That with parts of the 17th Regt, places almost all the old 8th Div now with the 48th Div.

The 48th Div by British reports shows these formations

shown April 1918 Allied reports 191st Regt (1500 men 12xMGs) + 23rd Regt 1Bn/123rd Regt 2Bn/24th Regt + 46th Stom Co -

shown May 1918 Allied reports - 2xBns/17th Regt (450 men 12 MG's) 23rd Regt + 2Bn/24th Regt (600 men 16 MG's) 66th Regt (350 men 6 MG's) 191st Regt (900 men 18 MG's) 1Bn/63rd Regt (250 men 6 MGs) -

shown June - July 1918 Allied reports 2xBns/17th Regt (450 men 12 MG's) 23rd Regt + 2Bn/24th Regt (600 men 20 MG's) 2Bn&3Bn/66th Regt (600 men 6 MG's) 63rd Regt (20th Div) (800 men 18 MG's) 143rd Regt (800 men 24 MG's) 191st Regt (900 men 18 MG's) + 125th Regt July 1918 part 1Bn/146th Regt (G) (225 men 17 MG's) -

shown Sept 1918 Allied reports 23rd Regt (550 men 20 MG's) 191st Regt (18 MG's) + 63rd Regt (20th Div) (18 Mg's) (1350 men 36 MG's) 24th MG Co (G) (4 MG's)

Cheers
