Recommended reading on the Ottoman Empire

#1

Post by Marcus » 22 Feb 2007, 16:21

The idea of this sticky is to collect recommendations on good books dealing with the Ottoman Empire, in particular during the 1908-1923 era.

Please post the title, author and a short (or long) explanation as to why you feel that particular title deserves to be included.

For English readers:

Ordered to Die: A History of the Ottoman Army in the First World War by Edward Erickson

http://www.greenwood.com/catalog/GM1516.aspx

It may have its faults but the best history in English on the Ottoman Army in WW1.

Defeat in Detail: The Ottoman Army in the Balkans, 1912-1913

http://www.greenwood.com/catalog/C7888.aspx

Erickson's next work--somewhat dry,but the penultimate history of the Balkan Wars concerning the Ottoman Army.

Osman's Dream
Caroline Finkel
http://www.osmansdream.com/

"all future historians will have to take note of this brilliantly concise yet thoroughly revisionary account of over 600 years of Turkish civilization...Elegantly written, Osman's Dream should be read by everyone interested in history, the Ottomans, imperialism, and the current status of Turkey's application to enter the EU."
Gerald MacLean, author of The Rise of Oriental Travel and Re-Orienting the Renaissance: Cultural Exchanges with the East

Frontiers of the State in the Late Ottoman Empire: Transjordan, 1850-1921 by Eugene L. Rogan

All about ottoman expansion in Jordan, Arab resistance to centralised control and a very good section (but sadly short) on the 1st world war, Arab revolt etc. Some good documentary material on militias, conscription, Circassian units etc. all from original archival material.

Cheers
Dominic
