Lt. Col. Cemil (Maj. Gen.Conk) writes in his book "Çanakkale Hatıraları" (Memories of Gallipoli)

"June 23rd 1915
We settled into our new positions at front till morning. Towards day break they brought 3 French prisoners. 2 of them were wounded. They didnt look like deserters as those we took last day at Domuz Deresi the Swine River. The not- wounded one who was from Marseille, was begging for pardon continously. The prisoners were from 4th Colonial Regiment. I interrogated them. They said that they had heavy casualties."

This photo of French troops on Lemnos,April 1915,suggests that the Horizon Blue uniform introduced in late 1914 was worn by metropolitian French troops at Gallipoli.Colonial troops like the Senegalese may have still worn pre-war uniforms with the red trousers.

Hi Folks, I'm to the understanding that the FFL also wore the pre-war uniform with cork helmet -Is this correct?

Best wishes and God Bless

Sorry Peter but the last pix is not from Gallipoli. The boatsmen are not Turks but Arabs. The boats are not Turkish sytlle. The costumes of the boatsmen are not Turkish but Arabic. The pix might be shot at German East Africa.

Peter,

Thanks for posting these pictures, great studies.

Is there any way we can find out where the picture of the troops with the train in the background, is? (not asking for anyone to search for me or anything like that - I guess it's impossible to identify the region)

Great discussion, also. Mr Saral, that was very quick about the boatmen! 8O 8-)

The soldier on the right is a costal artillary or heavy artillary Bashcavush(master sergeant). He is German in Turkish uniform.

I presume that the pix is shot somewhere near Mousul/Musul. Mosul is the main oil producing place. Those soldiers in ketten(chains) are deserters. They are Turkish. Those sitting men in local costumes are also deserters but Iraqi Arabs.
Thanks for the pics. I havent seen them before.

The "walrus" standing to the left seems to be a Marineingenieur - Naval Engineer. Note black velvet on his collar.

The Mosul photo also shows a sailor? This might suggest members of the Tigris-Euphrates Flotilla heading towards Mesopotamia.

http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 0&t=121168

Some men of the Breslau and Goeben made up this German naval contingent.
