Turkish Flieger Abteilung 14

Post by Söderbaum » 06 Jan 2012 10:43

Hi

When Hptm (German rank) Seelig left the command of Turkish FA 14 in May 18 it is reported that another German officer took over until Aug 18.
One source name him Oblt (probably Turkish rank) Levin, which is a common name in my country.. :)
Another source (Serno) gives his name as Lewien..

I cant find any of these names in my files, so I wonder if anyone knew the correct name of Levin-Lewien..?
He apparently also was commander of at least one more Turkish FA...

Interesting document Matt..!

I knew that Seelig took over OKofl 4 (or Kofl 4T) in 0518. But he was later
posted home due orders by Serno.
I cannot read the signature.. :x

Regarding who took over TFA 14 after Seelig the spelling Levien is a new hint.
I can so far only find two German officers as possible candidates. The most likely is an
Lt dR x Levien from FAR 24 (1914).

So now it is "only" to proof that he is the wanted man.

:)

Hi Matt

The signature dont have any dot over an possible i, but Wilberg is possible. But if so he dont have any connection to the later General.
An possible candidate is an Lt dL Wilberg from LwB Anklam (1914). But I dont have any notes that he had a connection the German or Turkish Air Force.
Interesting to note that from the same Landwehrbezirk in 1914 it existed an Oblt dL Levien..;)

So no possible solution yet

Söderbaum,
Here's what I found in the book titled "First World War, IX. Volume, the Turkish Air Operations" prepared by the "War History Department of the Turkish Staff Major" published in 1969.
By January, 1918; the former German "Königl. Preuss. Flieger Abteilung 305" was sent to Der’a in Syria under the name of "Osman'lı Hava Bölüğü No.14" (i.e. the Ottoman Air Company Number 14) to be joined by the 4th Ottoman Air Company which until then was stationed in Silifke, Turkey. Soon transferred to Amman, Jordan on 31st of January, 1918; they were both to return to Der’a, Syria by 22nd of March 1918. To re-organize the Air Operations of the Ottoman Army where the number of planes was constantly dropping due to contnuous fighting; a new "4th Army Air Force Command" was created and Major Zellich was put in charge. By July, 1918; the only Air Force remaining in the theater of war was the 14th (i.e. the 305) Air Company since all other units were now without operable planes. Understandably, all pilots and auxilliary personnel were absconded to the latter. Soon after the major British offensive which began on the 19th of September, 1918; this final Air unit was first withdrawn to Rayak Station in Lebanon where they had one last duty to perform. After helping to secure the safe withdrawal of the 7th and 8th Ottoman Army units to the north of Halab, Syria; all remaining planes were destroyed whilst the personnel were sent to Istanbul by train following the signing of the Armistice on the 30th of October, 1918.
I hope this has been of some assistance, best regards.

Hi Osman,
Interesting info!

Here is a signature of Wilberg that I found online. It looks different to the signature on the first document.

Matt.

Hi Matt,
You certainly are right about the signature. Even though I'm not very familiar with German names and orthographyİ I will venture to say that this latest document bears the signature of Major Zellich. The fact that the date; 31st of March, 1918 and that the person who had signed it was the commanding officer of the 4th Ottoman Army Air Contingent; certainly indicates the person in question.
Best regards, Osman Levend
