This plate covers the 1st Lancers Regt (imperial Guard), and the Ertugrul Cav Regt (Imp Guard). This interesting point about these two regiments, is that the Ertugrul, was one-in-the-same as the Ist Lancers. Both regt. used the same troopers (but operated separate Regimental Staffs, each with their own uniforms). The troopers, continued to wear the same uniforms, except exchanging the shoulder scales, and dress saddle -blankets over if the training under the Ist Lancers (yellow scales), or the Ertugrul (white scales). The reason for this was the Ertugral, was being raised through the 1st Lancers, and after 1909, were eventually amalgamated (as the 1st Lancers).

This plate illustrates the new M1909 uniforms. Newly introduced in 1909, but still using 1876 period rank insignia. Colour for these early uniforms varied widely, the 'Mouse-Grey/Brown' was more or less interpreted to range between grey-earth brown, to olive green. The new M1909 German -styled buckles are also illustrated.

This new chart looks at the development of the French 'Uniform of the Orient' (the Zouave), in the Ottoman Army between 1861: its introduction, till 1908. It was still in service with the reserves likely as late as 1914.

The other point to note, is that the 1861-76 period saw the introduction of cuff chevrons to indicate officer, and NCO ranks. The system was short lived, and was used concurrently with later 1876 shoulder insignia.

new plate on rank system: This shows the Infantry/Army NCO shoulder boards from 1909, till wartime. As well as the Gendarmes used of cuff insignia (adopted early in 1909), on their wartime field uniforms. The Army also adopted these cuff rank bands as well, early in the war.

Revised 1908 Revolution uniforms:
Image

The POWs in Plate 34, and the Albanian guards are both wearing the same/similar pattern Ottoman Army fatigue jersey. The Egypt Army up till 1914, was using a mixture of Egyptian made copies of Ottoman basic uniforms in particular the white, and blue cloth version of the fatigue jersey, as well as British made -uniforms for the Egypt Army which resembled British period army issue. As well, the tunic button used was the Ottoman Army 1876 pattern star & crescent button. Uniforming the POWs came from these stocks.
