Revised plate on the 1854-1861 'Gap' in rank insignia. Basically, the end of orders came in 1853, and from that time - through the Crimean war - there is little or no evidence for individual ranks - till 1861, when a new system is introduced with the use of cuff chevrons. As can be seen in the Gecer article - this whole period of transition is missed-out, he illustrates late/post -Crimean War uniforms as from the 1876-1908 period (this is a miss-dating as these date from 1860). Nor does he illustrate the actual rank system in use between 1861-1876.
The Crimean period (1854-61) is unique as the Ottoman Army used rank bands - that is rank groups (ie LT, CAPT etc), effectively all wore the same rank rank insignia.
