Grave of Nurim Pasha?

#1

Post by gyuresz » 01 Apr 2013, 20:49

I am reading the war diary of an Austrian officer who served on the Palestine front in 1918. At one point he mentions that his artillery unit has taken position on the hill of El-Hod (on British military maps often spelled es El-Haud), about 20 km West of Amman, on the Eastern bank of the Jordan river. He reports that on the top of the hill there is the marble gravestone of a certain Nurim Pasha, a lieutenant-colonel of the Turkish general staff, who fell in combat at this place, therefore he was buried here.

I have tried to find out in vain who this Nurim Pasha could be. I have found no officer with this name, but I have found two others called Nuri Pasha: one of them was a field marshal, but he died already in 1900 and was buried in Istanbul; the other one was a general, he fought indeed in WWI, but he died first in 1942.

Any ideas who this mysterious Pasha could be?

Thank you,

He is Staff Major Mehmet Nuri Bey. CoS of 48th Div. KIA during Oct1917-Sept 1918 Battls. probably during Turkish advance To Şeria on July 14th 1918
Pasha means general. He was not a paha a Bey. Senior Officers with the tittle Mojor Lt.Col. and Col are Bey, the others are Efendi

Will you please name the book and its author
