Mates,

I notice this comment on the Offical History page 401;

"Upon the move of the 1st Army Command Headquarters from Gallipoli to Istanbul, the task
of defending the Saros area was given to the 17th Army Corps Commander, Brigadier Back
Paşa. This Army Corps was put under the command of the 5th Army on October 7, 1915. A
majority of the 20th Division, which was under the command of the 17th Army Corps in the
Saros area, was sent to the command of the Southern Group in installments until the end of
October 15, leaving one regiment in the Saros area."

I had trouble finding Brig Back Pasa

Our good friend mentions this on his site [email protected]

XVII 3/15 Gallipoli: 4/15-3/16
Caucasus: 1/17-10/18 Col. Selahattin Adil Bey (I have no record in Caucasus) shown Symrna (coastal defence around Izmir)

So he has no commander for the 17th Corps during 1915?

My records show - Col Selahattin Adil Bey 12-16 to 11-17 (shown 1-17 to 10-18) to Col Nureddin or Nurettin Ibrahim (Konyar) or (Sakalli) 11-18 to 12-18 to Selahattin Adil Bey 12-18 to 1-19 to Nureddin Pasha 1-19 to 3-19 to Ali Nadir Pasha 3-19 to 5-19 reports place LtCol Bekir Sami Bey (Gunsav) when Mustafa Kemal Pasha landed on Samsun 19-5-19

So who is General Back

The only possible Back I have is

Back Ulrich Maj to Col Askeri okullar Basmüfettisi Çanakkale'de komutan (Military schools Chief Inspector Commander in Canakkale) Cephe gerisi Daire Baskani (Front rear Office Chairman) 1914-18 (1864 - 1947) from 147th IR (not identified)?

I have no mention of the 17th Corps with this man

Do you have any ideas for who he is?

Cheers

Tosun,

Thank you.

Its appears Ulrich Back was the commander of the 17th Corps at Canakkale or more correct around Seros Bay, in late 1915

When he returned to Germany is unknown but he shows up as commander 16th Bde (8th Div) of the Germany Army on the Western Front in April 1918.

I had him as per that details many years ago as, Askeri okullar Basmüfettisi Çanakkale'de komutan (Military schools Chief Inspector Commander in Canakkale) and

Cephe gerisi Daire Baskani (Front rear Office Chairman)

What he did in these I am unsure at what dates he had these jobs?

Cheers

S.B
