Raids on Greek Islands

Post by stevebecker » 04 Nov 2020 06:10

Tosun/Mates,

Are you aware of the mentions in Von Sanders book about raids from the Greeks on the Turkish coast around Smyrna.

He mentions the counter raids by a few Germans against these attacks by the Greeks?

Schuler Capt Cav activity in Smyrna 1916- (not identified)? shown in book by von Sanders

Hesselberger ObLt Cav activity in Smyrna raid on the Island of Kekova in the Mediterranean 3-11-16 1916- (not identified)? shown in book by von Sanders

Linsmayer possibly Adalbert ObLt activity in Smyrna surprise attack on the hostile armed bands from the Island of Gimnonisi west of Aivalik 18-9-16 1916- (born at Gemünden a. M Unterfranken ) possibly from 5Bty/Fußartillerie-Regiment No 3 leicht verwundet (minor wound) WIA 1914 & schwer verwundet (badly wounded) 1915 shown in book by von Sanders

Any details on these raids by the Grreks as the war went on?

The raid is to tiny Meis (greeks call Megisti, italians call Kastellorizo) not to greek islands. This tiny island only 1.2 miles away from turkish town of Kaş of Antalya province was turkish during 1512-1915. Today the problem still goes on. The recent conflict between Turkey and grece was again Mais. Greeks clain that the line between Rodos and Meis is their naval zone. According to that absurt claims no naval zone remains for Turkey's main and e.g. I mayself living in Alanya must get permission from greek authorities to swimm at the wonderfull sandy beach. Dear Steve the problems of WW1 are not solved still goes on.

Tosun,

Thanks mate yes.

Schuler is also mentioned by Sanders for the action when they sunk the British Seaplane carrier "Ben My Chree" around Meis (Castello Rosso) Island 9-1-17

Linsmayer mentions the raid on the Island of Gimnonisi west of Aivalik

(Ayvalik) is north of Izmir and the Island west is Lesbos, but I could not find any town called Gimmonisi?

Hesselberger raid on the Island of Kekova, which is east in between Kas and Demre?

It appears to be no record of these raids into the Greeks Islands, other then what Sanders mentions?

Tosun,

Sorry mate I did not know?

I wonder who did it and why?

it appears you maybe clear now?

I surpose we all have our views that conflict with others, but its the reason we discuss these and then get to the bigger ideas of remembering history and those who were in it

Cheers and stay safe

The "banning" was a temporary issue with the forum and unrelated to any users affected: viewtopic.php?p=2300881#p2300881

Sanders mentions only names of a few germans. He does not mentionany Turks. But the real horo was Artillery Captain Mustafa Ertuğrul Efendi. (Col Aker) Son in law of famous Inf Col Şefik Aker C of 27th I.R and 19th IDıv at Gallipoli. He and his 4 Erhart mountain guns sunk the ships. We discussed the matter in 2004
