RECOMMENDED. A fine album, with a very, very nice track selection and a couple of rarities too. The notes are short and rather bad (too many speculations and free interpretations) and I suggest ignoring them; also, nothing was written on the authors and performers. Two tracks are incomplete unfortunately (track 3 and 9b), which is really a shame. But other than that - every fan of history and march music will certainly enjoy all of the featured sound documents. The tracks from this LP were later often copied by the CD pirates, such as the RMK Records, PzG, etc, and the Tomahawk Films also stole a couple of tracks for their own "Kriegsmarine" pirate CD (this edition is pulled from sale now). And, after nearly 40 years, it is still a rare real "Kriegsmarine" album (note: tracks 1, 4, 7 and 13 were composed and recorded before WWII, and thus also before the term Kriegsmarine was used, but they are navy-related and thus not off-topic). Detailed info below.

RECOMMENDED. A very nice set (one LP and one MC), with a fine track selection. The biggest downside is that it was opened with a completely off-topic track, "Prinz-Max-Brigade" - a Saxon mid-XIX century infantry march. What was the producer thinking? The "Graf-Zeppelin-Marsch" (track 6, vol. 1) is also rather off-topic, being an early XX century civilian transport march. The last track (14, vol. 2) is also a civilian transport march, and thus off-topic. But other tracks are matching the album title and are quite interesting, with more than a couple of rarities! Especially rare are Telefunken's DLV and Junkers records, and also Lindström's (Gloria) Legion Condor record. All featured Electrola recordings are quite rare as well, especially the early Herms Niel's one (track 9, vol. 2). Note: Dostal's "Fliegermarsch" is a 1912 Austro-Hungarian march, but it was quite popular in the Luftwaffe. And, the same as in the case of the previously reviewed album, the tracks from this set were also later often copied by the CD pirates, such as the RMK Records, PzG, SERP too, almost everyone actually, and the Tomahawk Films again stole a couple of tracks, for their own "Luftwaffe" pirate CD (this edition is also pulled from sale now). Unfortunately, together with the sound files, some disinformation was copied by the pirates as well, and spread further. Notice also that the popular online "Stukalied" file with a long battle sounds intro comes from this set (vol. 1, track 11a and 11b). Detailed info below.

It will be a full decade this year since the Brandenburg Historica released its first CD - "Gott, Kaiser, Vaterland" (and also a 100 years of the CDs "youngest" recording). Now, one might wonder why did it take me so long to review it, especially since it is an album of a company whose projects I've been only praising and highly recommending so far. The answer is simple and humble: even 10 years sometimes isn't enough to gather enough correct information and details on rarities such as those released on this CD. And even now, having finally found most of such information, I must admit that it took me an additional week to write it all down and to make sure that everything checks out. This album - through its music and the producer's thorough historical research - wonderfully illustrates the Imperial Germany, truly bringing its old spirit back to life one more time. And, as I wrote before, what I always highly appreciated was Mr Henaghan's (the producer's) urge and talent to pay attention to every detail, from all of the historically relevant information to the proper track order and selection. A full topic presentation which leaves very little space for a possible complaint. The album is being nicely opened: with a recording of an excerpt from the New Year's military morning ceremony, followed by the German Imperial anthem. And then we can hear compositions dedicated to: German Emperors (all three of them) - even the two of the last Emperor's sons - the entire Imperial dynasty - the foundation of the Empire - Imperial symbols (crown, eagle) - Imperial units (infantry, cavalry); also included are the tracks celebrating Emperor's birthday and reconstructing a traditional military parade before the Emperor. A Christian hymn played by a military band was included as well, of course, representing the religious side. Naturally, a couple of errors were made along the way - mostly in the recording dates, which were and still are extremely hard to find (some remain unknown). Other mistakes worth mentioning are: only the 2nd half of the composition being credited (a mistake commonly made worldwide unfortunately) for tracks 3 and 10, and the incorrect title of track 15 > but < the title was originally written incorrectly, on the record label (probably as a deliberate small joke); and there is an incorrect ID of an originally uncredited performer, mistaken with the performer of the reverse track on the original record (track 9). The well-made booklet, as always, contains also several excellent photographs, from the Imperial times, plus a brief history of the Empire and its rulers. The album ends with the title-song - a song which is the very essence of the Imperial Germany's spirit and a nice summary of everything we have previously heard in this truly marvellous CD - and, as such, it is a perfect conclusion for the album. My sincere congratulations to the enthusiastic team of the Brandenburg Historica on this previously unseen, one of a kind project and its 10th anniversary. Needless to say: highly recommended.

I really liked this CD. Though I'm a little put off by the old acoustic recordings, it's a valuable historical document and produced to Brandenburg Historica's usual high standards.

I hope that they can bring out more excellent CDs in the future. The last one, God Save The Tsar, was a treasure trove of obscure and rare recordings from Imperial Russia. Great stuff!

The "Gott, Kaiser, Vaterland" saga continues - and moves to the stormy seas! This time the topic is a largely forgotten story of the Imperial German Navy and the naval warfare of the early XX century. A great challenge for any producer and historian, which was bravely faced and successfully overcome. As before, the album comes with a large new portion of virtually unknown musical rarities, a highly informative and well-written booklet, completed with several excellent period photographs. Especially interesting are the early U-boat songs, the early recordings by Karl Flick (future Marine-Obermusikinspizient), songs dedicated to some of the most famous ships of the period, the overseas recordings of the captured band of the III. Seebataillon, and of course the early musical version of what would become the most popular war-song of WWII: "Wir fahren gegen Engelland". The album was properly opened and closed with the German naval anthem (vocal/instrumental), accompanied by the "Present Arms" and "Zapfenstreich". One track is off-topic, which was an honest mistake caused by the partial and translated crediting on the original record that was used (track 15 was released in Germany as "Blaujacken-Marsch" by an anonymous composer, suggested to be a German performance, while in fact it is a British recording of a today forgotten US march). Two tracks (12 & 19) were recorded after the credited period, however they were composed during the Imperial era. There are a couple more minor mistakes in the recording dates, which is perfectly understandable, as I already wrote in the previous review. And, the same as in the previous case, it took me nearly a decade to gather a sufficient amount of information on the featured tracks, and additional two weeks to re-check and write everything down. A wonderful album. Detailed info below.

RECOMMENDED. Just about when it seemed that some of the most influential sound recording pioneers might become forgotten and deleted from the pages of history, an enthusiastic German team of old record collectors and music historians saves the day! After a very nice CD dedicated to one and only Carl Woitschach (see page 1), an album dedicated to the Weimar Republic's leading military conductor of one of the most famous record companies of all time was made as well. His name: Joseph Snaga. A fine CD in excellent sound quality, with several rare tracks (including one of Snaga's own compositions), a booklet with brief notes on the tracks and the conductor (his death date is wrong though, but again, remember that the man was nearly forgotten), and a rare portrait photo of him, plus one with an orchestra. The only (but easily ignorable) downside for me personally is just the CD title, which is a post-WWII (and also post-Snaga's-lifetime) censored title of one of the featured compositions (after WWII, "Mit Bomben und Granaten" was changed to the less aggressive "Mit Schwung und Feuer"). It was supposed to be also referring to Snaga's performance style and passion, which I can understand - but still, at least to me, that title is only a reminder of a new period, very much different from the one Snaga made a mark in and thus I cannot relate it to the good old Weimar conductor. Nevertheless, and as I already wrote, the CD itself is very nice and the title can be ingored ad libitum. And I sincerely hope that more volumes with both conductors will be produced as well sometime in the future. Detailed info below.

Ivan,
Thanks for your warm welcome. I've been browsing through this music thread since September.
I bought a copy of the 'RMK CD 'Sieg Heil Viktoria' last year. The sound quality is not so great. Would you happen to know
of any decent quality pressings for the fourteen songs that appear on this album? There was an Italian pressing but
it's out of print now.
I 'd appreciate any suggestions you can offer.
Marshall

Try searching the YouTube, many of them can be found shared (by private collectors) in better quality than those offered by the neonazi RMK scammers (bear in mind that the performers listed in that ridiculous CD are all made up, except for track 10).

Cheers,
Ivan

Soldatenlieder III [LP]

Post by Fallersleben » 31 Jan 2016 11:40

Hello,

Years ago I found this uncommon 33 rpm vinyl record and I still ask myself what I really have here. Came in a complete white sleeve. The labels were labelled with an typewriter, sloppy cutted out and glued onto the record. That slip of paper showing the content is a copy. Markings on both sides 03/221143A and 03/221143B (the "03" because it's Teil 3?). Is it a master-record? Does a commercial record with this title and songs exist? Any ideas?

Best,
F.
