Hello, "HeadHunter131"

"Unter Kameraden" is indeed a fantastic medley - and it is also The most popular soldiers' song medley of the III Reich period.

Cheers,
Ivan

Conductor: Obermusikzugführer Herms Niel
Recording Date: 29.03.1938
Recording Location: Berlin, Lützowstraße 111-112
Record Company: Deutsche Grammophon GmbH, Berlin

Contents: Hinaus in die Ferne [Methfessel], Alles neu, macht der Mai [Anonym/v.Kamp], Der Mai ist gekommen [Lyra/Geibel], Das war in Schöneberg [Kollo/Bernauer/Schanzer]

Freut euch des Lebens [Marsch]
Composer: Lützow
Trio: Freut euch des Lebens/ Composer: Hans Georg Nägeli/ Lyricist: Johann Martin Usteri
Instrumental Group: Musikkorps des Infanterie-Lehr-Bataillons der Infanterie-Schule Döberitz
Conductor: Obermusikmeister Bendix Tumforde
Recording Date: 10.07.1936
Recording Location: Berlin, Lützowstraße 111-112
Record Company: Deutsche Grammophon AG, Berlin

"Mailiedermarsch" was composed in ca. 1914 by Wilhelm Lindemann (1882-1941), one of the best known composers of so called Liedermärsche - marches which are in fact stylized short medleys of songs. This is also one of such marches, composed of songs about the most beautiful month of the year - May. This particular recording was focused on the song in the trio of the march, and that is "Der Mai ist gekommen" (they also named the recording after it, although it is just one of the songs included). Chorus also sung two of this song's strophes here. Excellent recording, well-performed! "Freut euch des Lebens" ["Enjoy Life"] is a 1936 march by an anonymous composer, who was active in the Grammophon company under the pseudonym Lützow. March was named after the song of the same name, used in trio, which was composed by Hans Georg Nägeli (1773-1836) and written by Johann Martin Usteri (1763-1827) in late XVIII century. During the III Reich period, the old "Freut euch des Lebens" song was the main song of the KdF [Kraft durch Freude] organisation and this march was more than likely also dedicated to the same organisation (also, it comes from a recording session with purely political tracks). Recording was initially released two years earlier and released on Grammophon C 2400. Note: at the time when it was recorded (1936), band's unit was still a battalion; in 1938, when it was copied on this record, unit was already a regiment (that is the reason of it being credited as such here).

The same songs Niel recorded for Kristall [see page 1] - only much, much better! This "Es ist so schön, Soldat zu sein" is without a doubt The best version of the song (the same track was released also on Grammophon C 2784, presented here by "HeadHunter131"). Fantastic recording. "Tschingta, tschingta - Bummtara!" is excellent as well, with lots whistling and a bit of shouting as well (imitation of rooster's "cock-a-doodle-doo!"). Chorus sung first two strophes (out of three) in both songs.

Choral Director: Stabsoberfeldwebel Carl-Josef Trümper

"Übers Meer, übers Meer!" is one of several German songs set to the famous Hawaiian "Aloha 'oe" melody, composed by the last reigning queen of Hawaii, Lili'uokalani (1838-1917); it was arranged in 1941 by Carl-Josef Trümper (1892-1957), and by Fritz Kahle (for accordion); a fine and nostalgic sailors' song. Three strophes recorded. "Auf Java sind die Mädchen braun" ("Finster ist die Nacht...") is a very nice song about a sailor who has sailed all over the world, met girls of all colours, "brown, black and yellow", but always remained faithful to his "one and only" Marie in Hamburg, Reeperbahn. Song comes from Ralph Benatzky's (1884-1957) revue "Für dich" (1925), and it was set to the melody of American foxtrot "Will You Remember Me", composed by Santly & Richman. This info had been nearly completely forgotten since then and the song remained known by its opening line, "Finster ist die Nacht", and its authors were almost never credited. Two strophes recorded.

Ivan,

Hoping you are still around some years after the final post in this thread. You may have seen me in some other obscure places on this forum, as I have been scouring for information and trying to complement what I already know as I try to get a better grasp on the topic. First of all thank you for the digital sample, and second I was hoping there may be somebody out there who knows where to find some kind of digital archive of these musical pieces so that I could listen to some more variety and a little more than 40 seconds. Thank you so much to anybody who may have a link or two to share!

Grammophon E 11651

Post by Alexander B. » 05 Dec 2014, 12:43

I recently have come across a copy of a song that I never knew to be herms Niel's recording, Its not his writing, but I never knew he recorded it. The song is very commonly known as "Es dämmert schon im Osten" but is really titled "Wir fahren gegen Osten". I was lucky enough to snag it up for my own collection and it is now on its way here from Germany. Do you have this record, Ivan? Know anything about it?

Hi there,
I am the Lucky owner of this record; does anyone know anything on the Standarten-Kapelle 1 that is credited on the label ? Since the SS-Standarte 1 was located in Munich, I assume it was more the band of SA-Standarte 1 from Berlin that was here conducted by Müller-John, maybe just before the Musikkorps der LAH was formed. What do you think ?
