[Split from Unidentified SS bands]

I saw this SS-Totenkopf photo on the internet recently. Unfortunately I did not note the source and so I am sorry for not quoting it. I think it really is a superb photo.

Edit: I think the unit might be III/SS2.

Very interesting photo indeed, thank you Max of showing that!

Could someone identify the unit in the photo? I have never before seen a schellenbaum of an SSTK unit. Quite obviously it has a totenkopf insignia. The role of a schellenbaumträger was a very special duty within a German military band and usually reserved for the tall and strong :).

Interestingly there seem to be no band at all in this photo. This seems a bit strange to me because usually the schellenbaum is carried in front of a band and in cases like this when there are regular troopers standing behind it, they normally seem to display the unit banner instead.

What is the collar tab of a man on the right end of the 1st row? It might be a vertical totenkopf with a company number or a letter below it...?

The pictured schellenbaum isn't an SS-TV example; it belongs to II/SS2 VT, the second batallion of SS2.
Here it is in close-up

It is prior to 1936 when all the battalions were combined and named "Germania, (so the date of the photo is 1935). Note the plain cufftitle. The building is probably their barracks at Arolsen.

Then it must be my eyes. I thought it was III, especially with the totenkopf in the centre of the star under the cloth.

Hmm, I wonder if it's actually the LSSAH, because you can recognize the numbers near the runes (I know that the LSSAH also had the number '1' for a very short time in 1933, but still). And the inscription on the Schellenbaum also doesn't look like 'Adolf-Hitler-Standarte' to me.

Indeed, it's not LSSAH (they didn't wear numbered collar patches). It's SS-Standarte 2 "Germania", II Sturmbann. The Schellenbäume match perfectly.
