Westwall-Lied (Am Westwall blüht ein Rosenstrauch...)

Post by Ivan Ž. » 25 Aug 2020 13:47

The "Westwall-Lied", a.k.a. "Anna Katharin", was written and composed in 1940 by Rudolf Roonthal (pseudonym of Rudolf Rosenthal), better known to the marching music researchers and collectors as author of "Das Lied der SA" (Denn wir sind die braunen Soldaten...). The song was arranged for (jazz) orchestra by Edgar Gernet and published in June 1940.

From Hofmeister's Musikalisch-literarischer Monatsbericht 1940, p. 99:

It was recorded on 28 September 1940 by the band of Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur Königsberg/Neumark under Fred Fritzlar.
The original record label can be seen here: viewtopic.php?f=81&t=129087&p=1936572#p1936517

Finally, here are the (rarely-seen) original lyrics, from Sing mit, Kamerad!, pp. 8-9
