Kriegsmarine bands and their music routines

Post by Cantankerous » 16 Feb 2021 03:05

[Topic entitled "Music played by the Kriegsmarine" renamed by the host, Ivan Ž.]

Did the Kriegsmarine have its own musical band, and did Kriegsmarine sailors routinely play the German national anthem or a different "patriotic" song aboard submarines and surface ships (e.g. Bismarck and Tirpitz)?

Hello, Cantankerous

Like other army branches, the Kriegsmarine had many bands; check our topic list for some examples viewtopic.php?f=81&t=214057#p2281054

Both "Bismarck" and "Tirpitz" had a band of their own.

A national anthem was (and is) played on certain occasions (not routinely); an example viewtopic.php?f=81&t=12350#p2220397

The submarines had small crews and decks, which is why they typically had other units' bands playing for them when needed, from the docks.

Cheers,
Ivan
