August Nickel (1912-1963)

Post by FransN » 22 Jan 2021 09:33

[Split from Musikzug der 6. SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord"]

SS-Hstuf. August Nickel was born on 15.02.1912 in Neumünster.
John P. Moore's "Führerliste der Waffen-SS", 2002, lists him in July 1941 with a position of "Musikzug/SS-Art. Rgt. 2" and in June 1943 as in the "6. SS-Geb. Div".
According to a list of commanding officers (in the French language and IMHO not reliable), drawn up by the French occupational forces in Berlin, shortly after the war, and by "die deutsche Dienststelle (WASt)", Hstuf. August Nickel (1912) was the CO of the divisional HQ (Kdt St. Qu.) from 1942-1945. Also Kurt Mehner in "Die Waffen-SS und Polizei 1939-1945, Führung und Truppe", 1995 mentions him in this position. However I am pretty sure that Mehner is referring back to the "French" source.
He could at the same time be the bandleader of the divisional Musikzug (which does not seem to me as an all-day job).
Now to the more contemporary and reliable sources:
Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv Freiburg (BA-MA) file RS 3-6/21 lists Nickel as being transferred from the Stabs-Kompanie der Waffen-SS/Höhere SS und Polizeiführer Oslo to the position of Musikführer in the division "Nord" from 23.02.1943.
BA-MA file RS 3-6/19 lists him as Fhr. Musik Zug (in the division "Nord") on 10.06.1943.
Apart from the two BA-MA files, also Franz Schreiber in his divisional history mentions him as bandleader on 10.06.1943. The Musikzug was stationned near the divisional HQ.

Best regards,
Frans

Hello, Frans, and thanks very much for the detailed info (as usual) :)

Some additional info:

Some strange errors below: instead of "Sturmbann", the author wrote "Division", and instead of "Standarte", there's "Verfügungstruppe"

An interesting detail from an unfortunately-undated document, crediting Nickel as bandleader of the Norwegian Legion's Replacement Battalion.
